Every conversation matters
“If you hug me, I might cry”
Have you ever had those words said to you? The only way to get to that point in a conversation is to actually speak to someone. You have to start. In this particular case this young lady was going through some REALLY tough family stuff and she was noticeably down.
God intended for us to be a people that sees the needs of someone else and steps up for them, or at least reaches out to them. Are you reaching out to people? Are you starting conversations? I know for me, it is something I had to work on over the years. I am actually naturally introverted but not necessarily shy. I have had the privilege of having a mom that really loved me and poured into me quite a bit. I have a bride who used to be up front and center leading worship at our old church and always told me I had a voice (speaking at least) to share with others. So these two women have had great influence in my life.
But speaking to people past just “how are you today?” “Ok, how about you?” was really thought for me. I used to just leave that answer at face value. Not anymore. Now I say, “Oh, just ok? Is there anything I can do for you?” People are often shocked by that answer and it usually starts a conversation where depth is found. Guys you can all tell when someone is down and needs a pick me up or a shoulder to lean on. Sometimes it is tough to tell which one they want but it is our job to just offer one or the other.
This young lady I mentioned at the beginning of this whole thing said “if you hug me, I might cry” Really wanted a hug but knew she would be sobbing if she did. She denied herself that opportunity because she was in a public setting. But she later told me she was grateful I asked her and actually cared. My wife later brought her some flowers.
Please help me be that kind of blessing to people. Greet them with love in your heart. Enough at least to help people say more than just “ok”, or “fine”. Ask questions like, “what's new in life?” “Are you more excited for worship or the word?”
Serve Like Jesus,
