Pushups
Pushups make you stronger.
For some of us the thought of even doing one sounds like a pipe dream. But do you know how you get a pushup? By doing a scaled version of pushups. “So, doing a pushup makes me stronger but to be able to do a pushup I need to be stronger?” Yes that’s it! You’ve got it. Haha, what an interesting loop.
Let’s get there by doing pushups against the wall, then progressing to using a bench or chair, then to using a stretch band for assistance, eventually doing snake up style pushups and finally you will be able to do a full pushup. But that takes a lot, A LOT of time to progress to if it is not your soul focus. Once we have that first pushup, now it is a game of “how hard do I push it to get better at this?”
We need to work the muscle of invitation. Or the muscle of excellence. It is really hard to get good at inviting people without, well, inviting people. Or how about trying to make new friends without attempting to make new friends? We need to actually start that process or we will not ever be good at it.
Excellence culture is something that we have here at TFH. We are not striving for perfection. That is impossible for mankind. But we are attempting to show the Lord that what He has done for us really matters. It is not about having zero issues, or no mistakes. Actually I welcome those things on our team, because they help us grow. It is really about working on the muscle of 1% improvement every weekend with our team. If you are on the TFH team, you already do this well.
So just like a pushup takes time to build the strength to be able to do pushups, lets build the strength to invite people, show up for them on Sunday with our hearts ready to pour out and to make friends like Jesus.
Serve Like Jesus,
James Cooper
