Boombox

Want Fresh? Read the Old!

I’ve been listening to some great books by a few old school Christian theologians. Towzer, Spurgen, Chesterton. You know, some of those old school guys just hit it right on the head. I think some younger folks can think that the older the author the more likely they are to “not get it” You know what I mean but, “not get it?” Like when you were an 11 year old kid and you popped that tape in your Sony dual cassette Mega Bass Boombox, by Will Smith “Parents Just don’t Understand” That kind of “not getting it mom”.

Man I think I might be the only one that had that tape. No shade on Big Will.

But as we get older we realize our parents, those old writers, had some wisdom all along. They weren’t just full of dust waiting to enjoy their new retirement home. They actually have something to share. Guys, when I tell you that the heart of some of these men like Towzer talking about Titus in his book “Lead Like Christ”. Man, it’s perspective that goes deep. It’s like having a tape in one side of that boombox dropping some greatness and in that second tape deck I start recording to make my own mixtape of the best of the best. Thats the goal right there. Learn what we can from those that have come before us. Or even better just skip the outside sources and just dive into the word. Read from the great authors. Learn from the Author of our Salvation! The greatest author that ever lived.

“What has been is what will be,
and what has been done is what will be done,
and there is nothing new under the sun.”

Ecclesiastes 1:9

This does not mean we give up on innovation, it means that God is not surprised and all good things come from Him anyway. It means that he created all the good things of nature. Only we are surprised by the “new” It is new to us and not to Him.

Keep the desire to pursue Gods goodness and His plans. When we hear someone say, “God is doing a NEW thing….” We should hear, “God is doing the very thing He always intended for, through and with us, yet it seems new to us and everyone around us.” Much longer sentence but a much truer statement. Keep leaning into the word with excitement and vigor. Keep growing in the understanding of the context of the scripture too. It is so fun to dive deeper. I have SO much to learn still and I love that.

Let's end with a prayer this week.

“Lord help me see your word with a freshness, a new understanding that will allow me the access to a deepness a richness that is only found in you. God help me realize sooner that you have all the answers I need in that moment, like little James looking for answers outside of his parents, only to find out the answers were there all along. Give us the desire to understand you more fully. Let us hear you more each day. We love you and are so grateful we get to be a part of your plan in someones life. You are the best father, mentor and king I could ever ask for! Amen!”

Love you guys. Have a blessed day and see you on the weekend.

Serve Like Jesus!

James
